ONDC Hits 10M Orders, Signals India's E-Commerce Shift

India’s digital commerce ecosystem is witnessing a fundamental transformation as ONDC crosses the milestone of 10 million monthly transactions, marking one of the fastest adoption curves for a government-backed digital initiative in the country. This achievement reflects a 3x year-on-year growth, driven by rapid ecosystem expansion, increasing seller participation, and growing consumer awareness.

The network currently operates across 600+ cities, connecting 300,000+ sellers and service providers across categories such as grocery, food delivery, fashion, electronics, and mobility. Unlike traditional eCommerce platforms that operate as centralized marketplaces, ONDC functions as an open protocol, allowing multiple buyer and seller applications to interoperate seamlessly.

A significant driver of this growth has been the onboarding of small and medium businesses, many of whom were previously excluded from large marketplace ecosystems due to high commissions and operational complexities. ONDC enables these sellers to go live quickly, often within 24–48 hours, significantly reducing the time-to-market.

From a financial perspective, sellers on ONDC report 10–20% higher profit margins, largely due to reduced intermediary costs and improved logistics flexibility. The ability to choose logistics providers dynamically allows businesses to optimize fulfillment costs, which typically range between ₹20–₹30 per order, and in some optimized cases, even lower.

Another critical factor contributing to ONDC’s growth is data ownership. Unlike traditional marketplaces, where customer data is largely controlled by the platform, ONDC allows sellers to directly access and leverage their customer data. This shift is enabling businesses to build stronger customer relationships and improve retention strategies.

Industry experts predict that ONDC could scale to 25 million monthly transactions by the end of 2026, potentially capturing a meaningful share of India’s rapidly growing eCommerce market. As more enterprise brands and technology providers integrate with the network, ONDC is expected to further accelerate adoption and redefine how digital commerce operates in India.
